Bio

6333_1148682392079_1078166815_30484445_2393346_s Jessica Max Stein, known as Max, is a freelance writer and teacher. She is working on a biography of Muppet performer Richard Hunt, based on her zine The Rainbow Connection: Richard Hunt, Gay Muppeteer.

Stein is the author of ten publications, including The Long Walk Back to Myself, a best-seller at Microcosm Publishing, and Body Language, an Honorable Mention in the 2007 Zine Yearbook. Her poems and nonfiction have appeared in the Sun magazine, make/shift magazine, and Sinister Wisdom, among other places; her work has also been included in exhibitions at the Queer Zine Archive Project and the Barnard College Zine Library. She was a 2007 Amy Award winner for women’s poetry from Poets and Writers magazine.

From 2001-2003 she covered queer and women’s issues at the Indypendent, a progressive New York newspaper. She won a 2003 Independent Press Association Award for Best Editorial for her coverage of the anti-gay murder of Sakia Gunn. She teaches English at the City University of New York, and lives in Brooklyn.
